Webinars and Web Meetings

May 2022

We were able to present two events in May. The first was our CWEEL kick-off Web Meeting which featured four excellent women’s career paths and insights into their leadership journey. The second event was a technical webinar featuring Wastewater Energy Transfer.

CWEEL Kick-off Web Meeting

What Makes a Leader?

The Evolution of a Career in Energy and Environmental Leadership

For our CWEEL kick-off we welcomed five amazing women to engage in a conversation on the evolution of a career in energy and environmental leadership. This event featured five incredible women in various stages of their careers in energy and environment – from environmentally passionate engineering Student Jana Giles, GHG reduction Consultant Anna Harman, ESG and climate change Senior Manager Afaf Azzouz, energy efficient and low-carbon Research Officer Heike Schreiber and energy consulting President Laurie Wiegand-Jackson.

Wastewater Energy Transfer Webinar

Wastewater Energy Transfer (WET) represents a wide spread and universal opportunity. This presentation helped to educate participants on this opportunity and the challenges associated with it. The Huber Therm-Win® System as well as other WET technologies were be discussed. A brief overview of Noventa’s WET Project at Toronto Western Hospital as a case study was presented.

Ottawa Community Housing has completed Canada’s first Panelized Net-Zero Deep energy Retrofit.  197-203 Presland, a 1970 2 storey 4 unit block of townhomes, has been retrofitted with a pre-fabricated exterior envelope which has drastically reduced its energy consumption while a mechanical retrofit has replaced natural gas burning equipment with heat pumps and a Heat Recovery ventilator to provide green house gas free heating, cooling and domestic hot water. The southern facing roof has been covered with 35kW of solar panels which generate as much energy as the building consumes annually, making this a net-zero energy and green house gas retrofit.  In this presentation, Dan Dicaire, Manager of conservation and sustainability, will walk through the design and construction of the project as well as the financial and societal implications of these deep energy retrofits.  These deep energy retrofit projects not only address housing and affordability issue, they also stimulate the economy while eliminating green house gas emissions from a historically neglected sector.

March 2022

Cold climate heat pumps are making the move from future tech to modern mainstream. Traditionally, heat pumps were primarily effective at maintaining comfortable temperatures in moderate climates, but in a recent pilot program, Envari demonstrated that cold climate heat pumps can be used in considerably colder conditions and get the heating and cooling job done most days of the year. That’s a game-changing result that bodes well, not just for home heating, but also for future commercial and industrial applications.
